As I explored the grounds of the Shoren-in Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, I found many ancient trees. This Buddhist temple, also known as the Awata Palace, was built in the late 13th century

These temple gardens were quiet and dignified, and the trees showed their connection to the Earth. Wandering in this temple was a remarkably peaceful experience. It is a bit off the beaten tourist track in Kyoto, so there were few tourists and only a few Japanese visitors.

Some of the camphor trees are more than 800 years old. The roots of this tree, photographed in the mist of a twilight hour in autumn, exemplifies this connection.

98mm, with three exposures at 2, 4, and 6 seconds at f/32 and ISO 200, tripod mounted, processed in Photoshop and converted to black and white using the “Straight Up” preset in Perfect B&W.
